Meal Plan Accommodations and Food Allergy FAQs
Some students who have food allergies may be determined eligible for reasonable accommodations. Students should contact NC State Dining to investigate options available for students and/or to request a meal plan accommodation. Students may also connect with the DRO by completing a disclosure form and submitting documentation of their disability.

What if I have concerns about living with a roommate?
Contact University Housing after speaking with your assigned roommate if you have concerns about your health and safety.
Will the DRO coordinate my accommodations and emergency action plan with other relevant departments, including housing, dining, and health services?
No, the DRO does not act as a case manager or care coordinator. DRO can provide recommended contacts on/off campus, such as:

What emergency procedures are in place in case of an anaphylactic reaction? If needed, will staff give epinephrine?

Will my resident advisor (RA) be trained on food allergies, signs of an allergic reaction, emergency procedure, and how to administer epinephrine? Will the school allow my RA to administer my epinephrine in case of an emergency?
The RA’s are trained to call 911 but not to administer epinephrine, per housing policy. All housing staff are provided with AllerTrain RA™ and campus-specific allergy training during their staff orientation. They are informed of the symptoms of an allergic reaction in the training. The first responders have epinephrine. Epinephrine is meant to be self-administered.
How will my food accommodations at special events like student orientation and dorm celebrations be handled?
NC State Dining employs a full time registered dietitian who trains all Dining and Housing staff on food allergies and preventing cross contact. NC State Dining uses Allertrain® and in-house training to ensure all staff have a thorough understanding of food allergies and Celiac Disease.
Foods served on campus are marked for the 9 major allergens and all menu items have an ingredient list that students can access online at: https://go.ncsu.edu/dining-menus Students with allergies can self identify and sign up with NC State Dining to get an email notice before special events in the dining halls to make sure they are aware of the special foods that contain their allergens. NC State also has an allergy support group called SAFE EATS. Contact Lauren Smith at lauren_smith@ncsu.edu for additional information or to sign up.
